Community Collaboration Provides Bunk Beds for Foster Children

Instructions

A heartwarming initiative has emerged in Oklahoma, where a group of organizations and individuals have come together to provide bunk beds for children in foster care. Led by Amanda Smith from Oklahoma Human Services, this collaborative effort involves Northeast Tech’s Foundation of Construction class, the 111Project, Pryor Lumber, and Fostering Mayes County. Through their combined resources and skills, they aim to ensure that no child sleeps on the floor. The project not only addresses an immediate need but also highlights the power of community partnerships.

This remarkable endeavor began when Amanda Smith identified a pressing need among local foster families. Recognizing the importance of comfortable sleeping arrangements for children, she reached out to various community partners. Her vision gained momentum with the generous support of Ryan Mason from Pryor Lumber, who donated all necessary materials. Meanwhile, Ryon Moore of the 111Project played a pivotal role in connecting the dots between needs and available resources.

Construction instructor Tim Palmer and his students from Northeast Tech's Foundation of Construction class took up the challenge of building these essential items. Second-year student Caleb Henington described how his team diligently measured and prepared the wood, taking approximately an hour per bed. Their efforts exemplify the value of hands-on learning while contributing positively to society.

Haley Madole of Fostering Mayes County ensures that the completed beds are stored safely until delivery. This final step underscores the importance of logistical coordination within such projects. Together, these dedicated individuals form a network committed to improving the lives of vulnerable children in their community.

Foster families in Oklahoma can request bunk beds through their caseworkers via CarePortal, an online platform facilitated by the 111Project. Already, five bunk beds have been crafted, marking just the beginning of what promises to be a transformative initiative. This story serves as a testament to the profound impact achievable when communities unite for a common cause.
